Rutgers 98 - Lafayette 56

Daily Home News - January 24, 1969

After almost a month's layoff, the 1969 team returned to action with a game at Lafayette, the first of a home and home series.  At the time Rutgers played both Lafayette and Lehigh twice every year, traditional games that dated back to what was known as the Middle Three rivalry.  Most likely this began when all three schools were private men's colleges of similar size.  But after Rutgers became the State University of New Jersey, the size of the student body began to expand to the point that even in the late 1960's it was becoming clear as Bob Greacen put it that the relationships "needed to be rethought."

Like most schools of the time, Lafayette had a very small gym, smaller even than the College Avenue Gym at Rutgers.  It had an unusual series of balconies reminiscent (or at least it reminded some of us) of an Elizabethan theater.   Like many college gyms of the era it had two game clocks, but with a significant difference - there was a three second differential between them, fortunately the games were never close enough for that to become an issue.

Morning Call (Allentown) - January 26, 1969

Bob Greacen remembers one play in particular from this game.  "John McFadden brought the ball into the front court and yelled to me to go back door, so I made a hard cut to the hoop while thinking o.k., John, but guy guarding me knows what I'm doing because you just told him.  It didn't matter because, even though the Lafayette kid knew it was coming, the bounce pass was perfectly thrown for a layup.  He took great pride in those assists and was a very smart player."

Letter Winner's Day 2019

On Saturday, January 5th, as part of its annual men's basketball letter winners day, the Rutgers Athletic Department honored the 50th anniversary of the 1969 team and team captain, the late Dick Stewart.  Below are a few pictures from the day.

It was my pleasure to give a tour of the College Avenue Gym where Dick played to his wife (Patti), daughters (Traci, Kelley, Maggie and Salem), son-in-laws, (Jeffrey and Chris) and grandchildren (Nolan, Knox, Walker and Kyla).
